Shubh Restaurant and Takeaway

Shubh is a vegetarian Indian restaurant in Sandringham (with a new branch in Onehunga) that always seems to have a queue of people from the counter to the door.

We’ve only been to their Sandringham branch, which has a dine-in area, but seems to be most popular for its takeaways. Their counter space is constantly stacked with plastic containers full of curries and dahls, bulk packs of rotis, chapatis and sweets, which all seem to exist in a perpetual cycle of being bagged up and sent out the door with customers.

The curries sit ready-made in bain-marie style trays; there are normally about eight on the go and usually all but one or two are vegan. The samosas are also vegan – make sure you ask for tamarind sauce to go with them.

The curries are tasty, reasonably spicy (but not hot) and there’s usually good variety. We’ve tried the black eyed pea dhal, eggplant, okra, chickpea and mixed vegetable curries. There are no labels, so we tend to just point at the ones we want.

The most remarkable thing about Shubh is the price. We recently ordered two of their ‘dinner meals’ (pictured) – a generously portioned thali of two curries, rice, two rotis, pickle and (if you want it) yoghurt. We also added an extra samosa each, plus one drink, and it came to $20. I had to double-check the board we ordered from, and yes, those dinner meals are $7 each. Check it out and let us know what you think.
